Project Ploughshares
| Location | Waterloo, Canada / Remote |
| Contract | Internship |
| Salary | CAD $23.00/hour, 31 hours/week (4 days) for 9 weeks |
| Deadline | 2026-05-05 |
Project Ploughshares, founded in 1976, is the peace research institute of the Canadian Council of Churches and one of Canada's most established disarmament and international security research organisations. Operating from the University of Waterloo campus, its programmes span nuclear weapons, the arms trade, emerging military technologies, artificial intelligence, climate security, and outer space — making it a significant voice in Canadian and international arms control and space security policy debates.
This Peace Research Intern position offers a structured introduction to policy-oriented peace research within a small, expert team. The intern will support researchers working across Ploughshares' programme areas, contributing to research summaries, fact sheets, report preparation, and communication and engagement initiatives. The postholder will also participate in internal policy discussions, gaining direct exposure to how a leading Canadian think tank frames and communicates positions on space security, nuclear disarmament, and emerging technology governance.
The role is particularly well-suited to students considering careers in arms control, space security, or disarmament policy. It is funded under Canada Summer Jobs and carries specific eligibility requirements. The position runs June to July 2026 and is conducted fully remotely.

Post-secondary education in international studies, political science, security studies, public policy, international development, history, or peace and conflict studies
Strong interest in peace issues and alignment with the mission of Project Ploughshares
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, and meet deadlines under pressure
Experience in research, writing, and policy analysis
Creativity and innovative ideas for digital communications
Eligibility: must be 15-30 years old, a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person, and legally entitled to work in Canada (Canada Summer Jobs requirement)
