The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) is an autonomous UN institution based at the Palais des Nations, Geneva. Its Space Security Programme is a globally recognised centre of expertise on the governance and security implications of outer space activities, maintaining the Space Security Portal and organising the annual Outer Space Security Conference. This Researcher position contributes to original research on space security governance, the Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space (PAROS), and the security implications of emerging space technologies. Responsibilities include producing peer-reviewed publications and policy briefs, designing expert conferences, engaging the diplomatic community, and supporting fundraising. The role offers deep engagement with multilateral processes, UN member state delegations, and the global space security policy community. Minimum five years of relevant experience required. 12-month contract with extension possible.

Requirements

Advanced degree (Master's or equivalent) in international affairs, political science, international law, public administration, disarmament, or a related field Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in international security research, space policy, or disarmament Deep knowledge of current space security debates including PAROS Experience in project management including budgeting, event organisation, and donor reporting Proven ability to lead complex research projects and produce peer-reviewed publications Fluency in English required; knowledge of another UN official language highly desirable Apply by email to unidir.recruitment@un.org with subject: Application: Space Security Researcher
