The Open University hosts AstrobiologyOU, an interdisciplinary research group addressing scientific, ethical, and governance challenges in space exploration, supported by UKRI, the UK Space Agency, and the European Space Agency. The MoonRISE project investigates the cultural, scientific, and environmental dimensions of lunar sites of interest, with a focus on governance and ethical frameworks required to manage competing claims over those sites.
This postdoctoral position sits at the intersection of Science and Technology Studies, space diplomacy, and lunar governance. The successful candidate will develop theoretical frameworks to operationalise the concept of space diplomacy as an analytical and practical tool for lunar governance, engaging with questions of justice, conflict resolution, and value pluralism.
The postholder will design methodologies applicable to policy processes, engage diverse communities affected by lunar exploration, and produce high-impact peer-reviewed outputs. 21-month fixed-term contract.
Requirements
Completed PhD with a strong Science and Technology Studies (STS) component in Geography, STS, or related Social Sciences or Environmental Humanities disciplines
Demonstrated ability to translate theoretical research into practical insights or research methodologies
Experience working within interdisciplinary research teams
Experience engaging with non-academic partners or communities beyond academia
Track record of peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations appropriate to career stage
Strong written and oral communication skills
Desirable: familiarity with space governance and global institutional frameworks relevant to outer space
