About the position

The Leverhulme Centre for Humanity and Space (LCHS) at the University of Leicester brings interdisciplinary Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences research on humanity's relationship with space into one place, based at Space Park Leicester, where researchers work alongside physical scientists, space companies, businesses, and governmental bodies. This post adds dedicated space law capacity to a Centre that has otherwise focused on the humanities and social sciences, and complements the University's wider research on the legal frameworks governing space activities by states and private entities. The Research Associate will carry out a research project in international space law, with a particular interest in the responsibility of private actors under international law for activities in outer space. Possible areas include environmental protection, sustainable space exploration, space resource utilisation, property rights, and related international litigation. The postholder is responsible for developing and delivering the research, producing academic and public outputs, building networks with external stakeholders, and taking part in conferences, workshops, seminars, and Centre activities. Mentorship, professional development, and support for research and impact projects are included. This is a strong fit for an early-career public international lawyer who wants to build an independent profile in space law, in a setting that connects academia with the UK space sector. The appointment is full time or job share, fixed term from 1 February 2027 to 31 January 2030. Informal enquiries go to Professor Rossana Deplano.
