About the position

The Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) is a global non-governmental, non-profit organisation representing university students and young space professionals to the United Nations, space agencies, industry, and academia. With registered offices in Austria and the United States, SGAC is forming a growing number of partnerships with industry, academia, government, and non-governmental bodies, and is reforming its internal governance and structure. Its Office of the General Counsel is expanding to review the legal documents that will shape the organisation for years to come. This volunteer Legal Officer supports the Co-Leads of the Office of the General Counsel in the day-to-day legal affairs of the organisation. Responsibilities include reviewing memoranda of understanding, statements of intent, contracts, and other agreements and preparing first-round comments; researching questions such as the tax and reporting obligations of an international not-for-profit registered in Austria and the US; supporting project groups that need legal input; tracking agreements approaching expiry or review; supporting reviews of SGAC policies and institutional documents; and assisting with administrative matters connected to registration, intellectual property, and financing, including the endowment. For early-career lawyers interested in applying their background to the space sector, this role offers practical experience in NGO governance and contract review within one of the most internationally active youth-led space organisations. The estimated time commitment is 2-4 hours per week, and all work is done virtually. Understanding of the global space sector is preferred but not required.
