The European Union Satellite Centre (SatCen) is the EU's geospatial intelligence agency, supporting CFSP and CSDP decision-making by providing products and services derived from satellite and aerial imagery analysis. Operating under the supervision of the Political and Security Committee and the operational direction of the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, SatCen is at the heart of the EU's space-enabled security and defence architecture. This Legal Assistant position is based in the Director Office's Legal Services unit, reporting to the Head of Legal Services. The primary focus is on supporting SatCen's implementation of the EU AI Act — a topic of particular relevance given SatCen's use of AI-enabled geospatial intelligence tools for CFSP and CSDP purposes — alongside EU data protection compliance under Regulation 2018/1725. Responsibilities include conducting legal analysis on technical requirements, risk assessments, and impact assessments under the AI Act for high-risk AI systems; contributing to AI governance implementation; drafting legal guidance and training materials on the AI Act and data protection; and providing broader legal and procurement support across SatCen divisions. The post offers direct engagement with the cutting edge of EU technology regulation applied in a classified security and defence context. The contract is 6 months (local contract, Spanish law); EU SECRET clearance eligibility required.
