The EEAS Space Division (SECDEFPOL.5) supports the EU Special Envoy for Space across operational, diplomatic, and policy dimensions — including operational direction of the EU Satellite Centre (SatCen), development of the EU Space Strategy for Security and Defence, and coordination of EU positions on space safety, security, and sustainability in multilateral fora. This Policy Officer position combines two distinct and operationally demanding roles. As PNT Policy Officer, the postholder contributes to the development and implementation of EU policies on secure Positioning, Navigation and Timing services — including Galileo and the Public Regulated Service (PRS) — monitoring political, security, and technological developments affecting space-based PNT capabilities and supporting coordination with EU institutions, Member States, agencies, and international partners. Sound knowledge of Galileo and PRS is explicitly required. As Space Threat Response Architecture Duty Officer (STRA-DO), the postholder participates in a 24/7 on-call duty system, acting as the first point of contact for the notification, monitoring, and initial assessment of space-related threats, incidents, and crises affecting the EU, its Member States, or EU space assets and services. The role demands high responsibility, strong political judgement, agility with secure systems, and the ability to perform effectively under pressure. This is one of the most operationally consequential space security roles in the EU institutional system. A SECRET UE/EU SECRET clearance is required (candidates must hold or be eligible to obtain one). The initial contract is one year, renewable up to six years. EU citizenship mandatory; EPSO CAST FG IV required.
