The European External Action Service (EEAS) is the EU's diplomatic service, responsible for implementing the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). Its Space Division (SECDEFPOL.5) supports the EU Special Envoy for Space across operational, diplomatic, and policy dimensions — including operational direction of the EU Satellite Centre (SatCen), development of the EU Space Strategy for Security and Defence, and coordination of EU positions on space security in the United Nations. This Policy Officer position covers three intersecting portfolios. On Earth Observation and SatCen, the postholder will provide technical and policy expertise on EO — particularly on the future Earth Observation Governmental Service (EOGS) — and act as operational delegate for SatCen, supporting the tasking, oversight, and product follow-up of EU geospatial intelligence in support of CFSP/CSDP priorities. On STRA-DO (Space Threat Response Architecture – Duty Officer), the postholder will participate in the 24/7 duty roster for the Space Threat Response Architecture and contribute to developing operational procedures to deal with threats to or through EU space services. The role also covers inter-service and inter-institutional coordination (EEAS, Commission, EU agencies, Member States) on space and EO files with relevance for external action, and contributes to policy development on space security and defence including emerging topics. This is one of the most operationally demanding and strategically consequential space policy roles available in the EU institutional system — sitting at the nexus of EU space intelligence, space security diplomacy, and CSDP operations.
