The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe, operating world-class ground-based observatories in Chile and coordinating the construction of the Extremely Large Telescope. ESO's Legal and Institutional Affairs unit supports the Director General on corporate-level and policy activities spanning Member State and Host State relations, engagement with international organisations (UN, EU, ESA, CERN), European science policy bodies (ESFRI, EIROforum), and global efforts to protect dark and quiet skies. This internship is directly relevant to the space governance community. Specific projects include coordinating ESO's participation in UNCOPUOS and the IAU Centre for Protection of Dark and Quiet Skies (IAU CPS) — one of the most active current intersections of astronomy, space sustainability, and satellite constellation governance — alongside developing ESO's long-term research security strategy, supporting Member State engagement, and assisting in the organisation of high-level institutional events. The role provides a rare opportunity to gain first-hand experience of multilateral engagement, science diplomacy, and the institutional architecture of an intergovernmental science organisation, with daily exposure to how ESO navigates relationships with UN bodies, EU institutions, and national governments. The initial contract is six months with the possibility of a six-month extension. A monthly allowance is provided.
Bachelor's degree in physics and astronomy, law, or political science — particularly EU affairs, international relations, or science diplomacy; Master's degree or near completion in a relevant field an asset Strong policy research skills including literature search, synthesis, and evidence-based analysis Understanding of how political and legislative bodies operate Professional attitude and ability to communicate confidently with senior stakeholders Excellent written and spoken English (mandatory); additional European languages an asset No previous work experience required; knowledge of science policy and prior experience in government or EU relations highly advantageous Recruitment preference given to nationals of ESO Member States, host states, and strategic partners
