The Swedish Defence University (SEDU) is Sweden's only institution where War Studies is taught as a discipline, hosting around 160 staff at the Department of War Studies and educating all Swedish military officers. This postdoctoral position is based at the Air and Space Division within the Department of War Studies — one of the very few dedicated academic space security research units in Europe. The postholder will join the subproject Space Power Theories and Warfare in the Space Domain, funded by the Swedish Armed Forces, as part of a broader effort to establish a stronger research environment for the study of space as an operational domain from a Swedish strategic perspective. Research will focus on advancing understanding of space power theory — the concepts, frameworks, and doctrines that inform how states develop, organise, and employ space capabilities in operations and conflict. Candidates with an interest in wargaming methodologies applied to the space domain are particularly encouraged. The role involves designing and conducting independent studies, publishing in high-ranking international journals, collaborating with the Systems Science for Defence and Security Department, and contributing to partnerships with the Swedish Armed Forces, NATO partners, and international academic networks. Research accounts for 80% of working hours. The position is two years fixed-term, extendable by one year, and requires at minimum passive comprehension of Swedish (with active proficiency expected within two years). Start date by agreement.
