King's College London – Department of War Studies
The Department of War Studies at King's College London is one of the world's foremost centres for the academic study of conflict, security, and international politics. Housed within the School of Security Studies, it combines strong theoretical grounding with empirical depth across nuclear strategy, drone warfare, international relations, and beyond. The Department is now seeking a Lecturer in Contemporary Strategy to complement and expand its existing expertise. This appointment is directly relevant to scholars working at the intersection of space and strategy. The three thematic profiles explicitly sought — emerging technologies (especially the autonomous revolution), multi-domain operations and emerging domains of warfare, and grey-zone/hybrid warfare — all map naturally onto the space security research agenda. Space is a paradigmatic emerging domain of warfare: anti-satellite capabilities, space-enabled ISR and strike, resilience of space-based infrastructure, and the integration of space into multi-domain operational concepts are among the defining strategic questions of the current era. A candidate whose research addresses these questions through the lens of strategic theory would represent a compelling fit for the position. The successful candidate will teach strategic theory through contemporary empirical cases at undergraduate and postgraduate level, develop an independent research agenda, pursue external funding, and contribute to departmental life. The role is indefinite (permanent) and based at the Strand Campus in central London.
PhD awarded in War/Conflict/Security Studies, International Relations, or a closely related field Emerging track record of research dissemination and a clear research agenda in military strategy and contemporary armed conflict in an area supplementing current departmental expertise Ability to teach strategic theory through contemporary empirical cases at undergraduate and postgraduate level Excellent academic writing and communication skills Evidence of contribution to community building within a higher education setting Desirable: research focus on emerging technologies, multi-domain operations and emerging domains of warfare (including space), and/or grey-zone/hybrid warfare Desirable: experience of successful grant capture Desirable: experience supervising dissertations and/or PhD students Desirable: Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) or on track to receive it within 1-2 years
